Every Manager is not a Leader

In this turbulent rapidly developing world, Managers who have leadership qualities are treasure to an organization as employees these era are hesitate to take orders from management and seeking self engagement.

Who are Managers?

Early in the history of management a manager was defined as someone who is responsible for the work of other people” (Druker, 2011). As V.S Bagard says management is a distinct process, a set of ongoing coordinated activities that managers exercise to achieve the organizational goals (Bagard, 2008). And he describe that there are three main levels of managers as follows

Source: Principles of Management (Bagard, 2008)

“Management is a process a systematic way of doing things. The four management functions included in this process are planning, organizing, directing and controlling” (Murugesen, 2012)

As author describes in his book there are three essential skills that managers should have. They are Conceptual skill, Human skill and Technical skill. The skills that managers should have may vary according to management levels.

“Regardless of their levels or areas within an organization, all managers must play certain roles and exhibit certain skills if they are to be success” (Griffin, 2013)

Who are Leaders?

“Leader is someone who has the ability to see that something can be better than it is now,is able to rally people to move toward  that better vision, can come up with a plan  to create that vision, and can work toward making that vision a reality while putting people first” (Morgan, 2020).

Characteristics of leaders are as Daren Hancott describes Leaders believe in themselves, leaders have a genuine passion for the job, leaders have a love for the people, leaders are people of integrity, leaders are effective communicators and listeners, leaders embrace and lead change, leaders have incredible energy and energize others, leaders lead by example, leaders develop other leaders, leaders build confidence and trust others, leaders achieve results etc.

Differences between Manager and Leader
                     Source: (Murugesen, 2012)

“Managers exhibit leadership styles and most leaders on occasion found that they are managing. Leadership and Management are both necessary for companies to be successful long term. Sometimes more or better leadership is required, and sometimes more or better management is required.  While leadership and Management are different concepts, they do overlap” (Hancott, 2016)

 Conclusion

Though management and leadership are different concepts, leadership is an essential part of management functions. So each manager is not a leader if they don’t have leadership attributes. Managers with leadership qualities are the needed for companies to achieve its goals and vision without any interruption of employees as employees are always happy to work with leaders.

  1. Even though Management and Leadership have been theoretically divided into two separate concepts, it can be identified that both philosophies have correlation with each other.

Organizations should Identify and develop the right people early. Coaching, Mentoring, and Motivating potential leaders while letting them know the objectives of the organization will make future leaders and the same will lead to make the organization much stronger.
